It’s summer and sunglasses are everywhere! BUT sunglasses aren’t just for summer. You really should be wearing them all year. You can buy $1 sunglasses at the Dollar Store or Dolce & Gabbana for over $1200 !!!
So let’s see if I can shed some sunlight on the topic. First of all why should you wear sunglasses? Because they help prevent certain eye diseases related to the sun. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygium. Wearing sunglasses that have UV protection can help protect against these conditions, keeping your eyes healthier, longer. UV is ultra-violet light. Ultraviolet light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that makes black-light posters glow, and is responsible for summer tans — and sunburns. However, too much exposure to UV radiation is damaging to living tissue. … UV light falls in the range of the EM spectrum between visible light and X-rays. So it’s important that your sunglasses can block the UV light. You’ll usually see a tag saying “blocks 100% UV light”. This is where it gets tricky…there’s no way to tell if the tag is truly accurate with inexpensive sunglasses.
How about “POLARIZED” sunglasses? Sunlight reflecting off smooth water, snow or flat roads can create glare which is not only annoying but can have a long-term impact on your vision such as causing cataracts. Blinding glare from the sun and snow blindness can even sunburn your eyes. Thankfully, polarized lenses can help to shield you against the dangers of the sun’s intense glare. You WANT your sunglasses to be polarized. How can you tell? They will usually say they are and when you put them on you’ll see the “glare” off your windshield or pool or ocean nearly disappear!
Let’s get to the really important stuff . Expensive sunglasses are almost sure to have UV blocking, polarization and quality lens that don’t “distort” objects. They will also possibly be made of glass and will be less likely to scratch. But of COURSE just like all sunglasses if you DROP THEM they will ALWAYS LAND RIGHT ON THE LENSES and have that annoying scratch right in the middle! It’s a LAW of the UNIVERSE…..and ALWAYS happens fastest with the most expensive sunglasses!
